Chapter 12 - Reunited again
----------------------------------

After a long and tiring journey through the outskirts of Hyrule, Link finally reached the Kokiri village. His heart was beating rapidly, unable to contain the anxiety in seeing his beloved Zelda again. The village was calm and silent, and Link was surprised that nobody had come to greet him.

"Hey Guys! I'm back!" He called aloud, but nobody answered. He looked around and saw no sign of his friends. He only heard the rustle of the trees swaying gently in the wind. It was really strange that the village was so calm and quiet like that. Worried, he went carefully into Saria's house to see if anyone was inside.

"Saria? Zelda? Where are you? It's me, Link! I'm back!" He called again, looking around, but there was no answer. He continued to walk around the house, looking for some sign of his friends, but it seemed that the house was empty. Suddenly, Link's foot accidentally bumped into something that slipped through the wooden floor. He looked down and saw a piece of red apple. He bent down and picked the fruit.

"But what is this? Why there is an apple on the ground?" He asked as he stared at the red fruit in his hand. Until he saw that the apple was bitten on one side. His blood froze and he felt a lump form in his throat. It couldn't be a good sign. He felt that something bad must have happened because nobody was in the village and it was not common to find an apple lying on the floor with a single bite.

Despair immediately took hold of his heart. Something was not right. Link left the house desperately and he walked around the village looking for his friends, but he didn't find anybody. The village was completely empty.

"Saria! Mido! Zelda! Hey, everyone! Where are you??"

Link screamed again but to no avail. There was no answer. His heart sank painfully with nervousness. Confused and desperate, Link began to run through the forest, looking for some sign of his friends.

"Saria!! Zelda!! Is anyone here?? Where are you??? Can someone listen to me?"

Link's desperate cries echoed throughout the forest. Saria, who was watching the Princess's body with her Kokiri friends, heard his screams.
With eyes full of tears, she ran in the direction of her friend.

"Link!" She cried, running close to him.
"Saria! Holy Goddesses, I'm glad I found you!"

She hugged Link tightly and cried on his shoulder. He hugged her back, involving the little girl in his arms.

"Saria, what happened? When I arrived at the village, you were not there! I looked for you everywhere!"

Saria could not stop crying. She grabbed Link's tunic and spoke amidst tears and sobs. "Link... Holy Goddesses! You wouldn't believe what... what happened... "- She sniffled and sobbed. Saria's throat tightened, she combed her fingers through her green hair, in an attempt to stop the tears running down her face.

Link looked into the little girl's eyes. Her eyes were swollen and red from crying. Link was even more nervous and distressed.

"What... What happened Saria? Tell me!!" His eyes were moist with tears that were about to run down his cheeks. "W-Where is Zelda? What happened to her??"

Saria closed her eyes to prevent another flood of tears. With a sinking heart, she could barely pronounce the sad words.

"...The Queen.... because of her... Zelda... she is... she is..."

Link looked at her for a moment, confused, and his mind began to spin suddenly with thoughts that were completely unacceptable.
His heart squeezed painfully as he grabbed the girl's shoulders in despair.

"No... She can't be..."

Saria hugged Link tightly and stood in silence, crying. The tense silence said more than words could.

"I-I'm so sorry, Link!" That was the only thing that Saria said. "We tried everything... but..."

Link could not stand those words. Zelda... By the Goddesses, this could not be true! He felt like his heart was breaking, shattering his happiness in a thousand pieces.

"No... No... No, Saria! No way!!" Link began to weep in despair. "She can't be... No!!!! This can't be true!!! This can't...!"

Tears flooded his vision, his stomach had frozen and his heart clenched in pain.

Saria looked away and sobbed, before looking at him again.

"I know it's hard... B-but... We did everything we could, Link... If... if you don't believe it... So... So come see for yourself..."

With a sinking heart, Saria took Link to the center of the Sacred Forest Meadow, where all the Kokiri were watching Zelda's body lying in the glass coffin. When Link saw the lifeless body of the princess he loved so much, his breath almost stopped and the cruel force of gravity brought him to his knees to the floor. He could no longer feel the ground beneath his feet, it was like a big hole was opening up right under him and sucking him into the earth. For a moment he really wanted to be sucked up by the earth, as this would give at least an end to his suffering. It was as if the world itself was crumbling before his eyes. It couldn't be true... It couldn't... His beloved princess, dead! It was not fair! His heart cried. How could the Goddesses curse him to find true love so quickly and just as quickly, take it away, rip off this love from him as if it wasn't anything important? And the worst thing was that he didn't have enough time to enjoy that love he felt for her. What had he done to deserve all this suffering? First, he was forced to separate from her by a stupid order of the Queen and when he finally returns home, hoping to see his beloved princess again, he finds her dead. Dead! How could this have happened? He never had bad intentions, never meant to hurt anyone, all he wanted was to love someone with all his heart and that was the reward he received for being a boy so kind? Link could now see how life was unfair. His life and all of his dreams have been ruined as if he had committed a terrible crime and was being punished for it.

"Zelda... No!!!!" He shouted, disbelievingly.

Running to the coffin where her body lay cold and lifeless, he removed the glass cover that protected her body and he wrapped the gelid princess in his arms, crying, a cry that hurt his soul. Despite being a silent cry, inside, his heart was breaking, tearing, screaming, and never again would be the same as before.

"Zelda... Why? Why did you have to leave me... Why??" Tears welled in Link's eyes, flooding his face. He hugged her even tighter, pressing her to his own body with all his might. Uncontrollable sobs welled up from his throat and he felt an immense pain in his chest as if a hole was opening inside it, sucking all his dreams, his happiness.

Link could not accept that it was true. This couldn't be happening! It wasn't fair! It looked like a terrible nightmare from which he could not wake up. He had waited so long to meet someone like Zelda, so much were the girls who tried to win his heart, but none of them had managed to win his heart as Zelda did. She won his love only with a smile, a look. And now that he was finally going to ask her to marry him... He sees her dead. And he can't do anything.

Link brought her face close to his. He stared at her for a moment. Her face was beautiful as always, her cheeks were so rosy and her lips so red like the petals of a rose. She seemed so peaceful as if she were deep asleep. But Link knew she would never wake up, she was forever sleeping in his arms.

"I see that not even death could steal from you your infinite beauty... You are still as beautiful as ever, my dear princess..." He murmured amid the silent cry, gently sliding his fingers through her pallid face. "Come back to life, my princess, my Zelda... Retain the same sweet breath, the same delicate skin you had in life... You are my love, my soul, my life... without you, I can not live anymore... I couldn't... never..."

Embracing her as tightly as he could, Link approached his face from hers, gently pressing his lips on Zelda's, kissing her with all his love. The kiss was sad, but it was full of love and passion and it was revealing all the feelings he felt for her. At the same time as Link was kissing her, the spell of the poisoned apple was breaking apart and slowly Zelda began to awaken from her deep sleep. She slowly opened her eyes and saw Link kissing her gently. When their lips parted, Zelda murmured still a bit sleepy.

"L... Link...?"

Link slowly opened his eyes and had a big surprise. Zelda was alive! Holy Goddesses, it was a miracle! Link's heart, which was previously broken, shattered into a thousand pieces, now was filled with a deep joy. Tears of happiness streamed down his blue eyes. Unable to contain the joy in knowing that his beloved princess was alive, Link hugged her as hard as he could, crying with happiness.

"Zelda, my love you're alive! The goddesses granted my wish! This is a miracle!"

Zelda was still a little confused, but the joy in seeing Link again was bigger than anything. She hugged him back with all her might, her heart leaping with joy. Willy-nilly the poisoned apple of her stepmother had actually granted her wish. Link had returned from his long trip and that was all that mattered to her.

"Oh, Link, by the Holy Goddesses, you came! My wish has come true! I missed you so much, my love..."

He looked into her eyes and smiled.

"I also felt really missed you, my beloved princess..." He whispered to her, stroking her beautiful angelic face, now so full of life. "I thought you were dead and that I would never see you again... I'm so glad you're alive! I could never live without you..."

"Neither could I..." She replied, kissing him tenderly. He just smiled against her lips and returned the kiss, holding her in his arms, picking her up bridal style.  At this moment, all the Kokiri children applauded with great excitement to the lovely couple of lovebirds. Zelda put her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as she deepened the kiss even more.
But suddenly, something unexpected happened. A bright light illuminated the entire environment. Everyone looked at the light and saw the gleaming white silhouette of a woman with wings and long hair. When the light fell, they saw that it was a beautiful fairy.

"B-but it's... The Great Fairy of Kokiri Forest!" Saria stammered, looking surprised at the fairy.

All Kokiri children did a reverence to the fairy. Link and Zelda looked at everyone without understanding anything of what was happening.

"Who are you?" Link asked, surprised.

"Greetings, friends! I am the Great Fairy of the Kokiri Forest. I am one of the ancient guardians of the forest. And I'm here because I have something important to tell Princess Zelda."

"M-Me?" Zelda stammered in confusion. Link put her back on the floor. She walked closer to the fairy. " What ... What do you have to say?"

"Your Highness, your father, the king of Hyrule is alive! And he has just returned from war."

Zelda's heart leaped with joy at the news and tears of happiness welled up in her eyes. Not only Link had returned from his trip but her father was back from the War! He was alive! Nothing could be better than that!

"Praised be the goddesses!" Zelda cried with joy. "This is a miracle!"
"However..." The fairy continued to speak. "He thinks you're dead, your Highness, and is seriously sick."

"Oh, no! And now?" Zelda's heart sank with worry. "I need to go back! I need to show him I'm fine! Link, you must take me back to the castle now!"

Link did not seem too thrilled with the news. If Zelda had to go back to the castle, that would mean they could never see each other again and that she could not live with him anymore. His heart sank and he looked at Zelda, conflicted.

"B-but  Zelda... What will become of us now? I mean... You are a princess and look at me! I'm just an orphan boy of the forest! The only way we had to be together would be if you could never get back to the castle! And I thought we could live together here in the forest... B...but ..." His eyes filled with tears and he began to cry. "B-but I can't stop you if you want to go..."

He lowered his eyes and wept silently, but Zelda put her hands on his face and stared into his blue eyes.

"Link, my love, don't say that! My father is a good man! He'll understand if I explain everything to him, I know! He just wants to see me happy and if he knows that our love is what makes me happy, he will allow us to stay together, even if you're just an orphan boy of the forest..."

Link looked at her, now a little calmer.

"You sure about that? Do you really think he would accept our union?"

Zelda replied with a calm voice, staring deeply into his eyes.

"Of course! I know my father very well. He certainly would accept that I marry a man who makes me happy, who loves me for who I am and not just because I'm a princess... I'll explain everything, he'll understand, I know..."

He smiled slightly at her and she did the same. The two exchanged glances for a brief moment.

"Alright then. Let's go to the castle!" Link said, confidently. He turned around and whistled shrilly.

Zelda heard the sound of hooves coming closer and closer until the beautiful chestnut mare appeared in the middle of the forest trees. She ran to her master and pushed her head against Link's chest, playfully. Link rubbed her nose affectionately. She neighed in response.

"Hey, girl! It won't bother you to carry two people on your back, will you? We have to go to Hyrule Castle."

Epona shook her head in affirmation. After he finished stroking his horse, he turned to Zelda.

"Have you ever rode, Zelda?"

"No..." She replied, embarrassed. "But I always wanted to. I never had time to learn, I was always too busy with the affairs of the castle that my stepmother forced me to do, you know..." Her voice trailed off.

"Alright then... It's not your fault. I'll help you then."

Link helped Zelda to mount in the saddle. After she had settled in the saddle tightly, Link climbed behind her and took the reins with one hand while the other remained on the girl's waist.

"Comfortable?" He asked.

Zelda felt her heart beat faster when she felt his hand around her waist. She had never experienced the feeling of being on top of a saddle and she felt a little insecure, but when Link grabbed her by the waist, she felt much safer. Blushing instantly, she whispered:

"Very comfortable."

Link just smiled. After saying goodbye to their Kokiri friends, he nudged Epona to speed up. The horse started to run, leaving the Kokiri Forest, heading toward Hyrule Castle.

When they reached the castle gates, as soon as the guards saw the princess, they intercepted Link, pointing their spears at him.

"Who are you? Release the princess now!"

Zelda raised her hands and said, "Stop! He is not a threat! He helped me!"

The guards lowered their spears and walked away.

"Glad you're alive, Princess!" Said one of the guards. "We thought that Midna, that crazy woman had killed you. How can we help you?"

"Take us to where my father is! I must see him!"

"Yes, Your Highness." The guards replied.

They opened the gate and Link and Zelda entered the castle. The princess ran through the great hall, looking for her father.

"Daddy!!" She screamed. "It's me, Zelda! I'm back! I'm fine!"

All the servants of the castle were there to receive the princess with great joy in their hearts. Zelda was very happy to know that everyone had missed her, but she still was not totally satisfied. She wanted to see her father.

But suddenly, her heart filled with joy when she saw Impa, the maid who had cared for her since she was a little girl. She ran closer to her with tears of happiness in her eyes.

"Impa! It's so good to see you again!" Said Zelda, hugging Impa tightly.

"Princess is so good to know that you are fine! We were so worried about you!"

Moving away from Impa, Zelda asked, "Impa, I need to see my father! Do you know where he is?"

Impa said excitedly, "Your father will be so happy to see that you're alive! Don't worry, I'll call him!"

Impa climbed the stairs that went to the royal chambers. She opened the door and entered the room. The king was lying on his bed, sad and heartbroken. He thought Zelda was dead and he could not accept the idea that he had lost his daughter forever.

Calmly, Impa approached the king's bed and said, "Your Majesty, I have excellent news to announce to you!"

"I'm sorry, Impa, but there is nothing else that is excellent for me..." The King said sadly. "Everything I loved was taken from me and now I'm not interested anymore in this life..."

Impa continued to talk, despite the sadness of the king.

"Not exactly, Your Majesty. Zelda is alive! And she's waiting for you in the main hall!"

The king stood up suddenly from his bed in disbelief at the news he had just received.

"What... What did you say?" He stammered in confusion. "Zelda is alive? How? Midna said that—"

"Midna lied. Many things have happened since you left the palace, but I think it would be better if you hear the real story with the words of your own daughter, because there are things in this story that you would never believe if I tell it myself."

The king could hardly contain his excitement in knowing that his daughter was alive. He got out of bed as fast as he could and hurried down the stairs, in anxiety to see Zelda again.

Meanwhile, in the main hall of the castle, a crowd of servants gathered around the princess, filled with joy to see her again. She was very excited and she was telling everyone everything that had happened to her so far.

"You mean that you were lost in the woods, princess?"

"Yes! But then I found a village of children! They welcomed me and took care of me!"

"And who is the lad who came along with you?"

"Oh, he's Link, the young man I met here in the castle garden! He lives in the village with the children. He was very kind to me and we ended up falling in love..."

Zelda continued to tell the servants about everything she had lived while she was hidden in Kokiri forest, but suddenly, she saw someone very familiar approach the crowd. Everyone was silent when they saw the king approaching. He stared at the beautiful young woman who stood before him. For a moment it was almost hard to believe that this beautiful woman was that innocent little girl that the king had to leave years ago.

"Z... Zelda?" The king stammered, unable to believe what his eyes were seeing. "Is... Is it really you?"

Zelda's eyes filled with tears. Finally, after so many years, she was reunited with her father. He was older, with some battle scars and marks, but she was sure it was him. His kindly look remained the same. Unable to contain her excitement, she ran in his direction and hugged him tightly.

"Dad!!" She cried with joy.

The king could hardly believe that this beautiful woman he was seeing was his little Zelda. He hugged her tightly, unable to hide the tears of happiness.

"My daughter! My little girl! How happy I am to see you again! I missed you so much!!"

"You don't know how much I suffered from your absence, Dad!" Zelda cried. "I-I thought I would never see you again!"

"I also thought that... You don't know how happy I am to see that you are well! I can hardly believe my little girl has grown so much and turned into such a beautiful woman! You look like your mother... She would be so proud to see you..."

"Yes ..." Zelda murmured, a little sad to remember her late mother. But her heart ached when she remembered her stepmother. She did not see her when she entered the castle and she was afraid of what might happen. Perhaps with her father's return, she would come back to be the same as before, a good and kind stepmother.

As if reading his daughter's thoughts, the king asked, "Now, tell me everything that happened, my daughter! Your stepmother lied that you had died of a mysterious disease. What... What did she do to you?"

Zelda's heart sank. As much as her stepmother had been bad for so long with her, she couldn't feel hate for her. She knew that something had made her stepmother change so much, she just didn't know what. If she told the truth, she feared that her father would become angry with Midna and punish her for what she had done. But she couldn't lie. It was not right to lie to her father after so long away from him. She chose her words carefully and tried to speak everything that happened so it did not incriminate anyone.

She explained to her father everything that happened from the time he went to war. She explained how Midna had changed, how she made her perform tasks in the castle, she also told him about the day she met Link in the garden, she told him about the huntsman, that she was lost in the Lost Woods and found the Kokiri village, she told him everything that had happened between her and Link, how the two were living a great love until the day he had to go away by an order of her stepmother, the day of the holy festival of the Kokiri, the old beggar woman, and the poisoned apple...

As she finished telling everything that happened, the king was astonished. He never imagined that Midna had been capable of everything and still lie to him, saying that Zelda had died from a serious illness. With a serious look, he called for his guards.

"Guards! Bring Midna here now! She has a lot to explain."

"Yes, Your Majesty!" Said the guards.

As soon as the guards began to search for the Queen, Zelda felt a tightness in her chest. She looked anguished at her father and asked, "What... What will you do with her, Dad?"

"I still don't know." The king replied in a serious tone, without looking at Zelda. "But she has to explain everything! She has to tell me the truth!"

Zelda lowered her gaze and felt a great pain in her heart. After a few minutes, some guards returned to the hall where everyone was gathered. They announced in a loud voice:

"Your majesty, the queen was found dead."

Everyone in the room looked up, startled. Zelda felt her blood freeze. The king looked at the guards, incredulous.

"What?"

"We found her corpse in a dark and empty room, where there were only pieces of a broken mirror everywhere. This fragment was spiked in her chest. Apparently, Your Majesty, it was a suicide."

The king took the bloody fragment of the mirror in his hands and examined it carefully. After thinking for a moment, he finally reached a conclusion.

"Perhaps this was the only way she found to get away from everything she caused... Or she killed herself so I would not punish her or she did it because she felt guilty and the burden of guilt was too much for her to bear... Well, whatever it was, we will never know the real reason she had taken her own life, and never know why she did so many evil things in my absence."

Everyone who was in the hall fell silent. Zelda began to weep silently and tried to seek comfort in Link's arms.

"She didn't deserve an end like this... I don't understand..." She grabbed Link's tunic, watering it with her tears.

Link wrapped Zelda in his arms trying to comfort her. He looked around and saw that everyone was very shaken by the Queen's suicide. He was very confused and he didn't know what to do. He was afraid that the king would not allow him to marry his daughter because he wasn't a nobleman or a prince. Perhaps this was the right time to ask the king to marry Zelda, so at least there was something to rejoice. He knew it was a moment of sadness, but he was nervous and confused and wanted to at least try to bring some joy to people with the idea of marrying the princess.

"Y-your Majesty ..." Link stammered, a little nervous.

"Yes, my boy?" The king spoke calmly looking at the young man.

"I-I was wondering if..." He swallowed. He looked around and started in a cold sweat, in nervousness. Taking a deep breath, he tried to muster the courage needed to keep talking. "If... If your Majesty would allow me... to marry your daughter..." He finished. His heart was pounding and he was even more nervous.

The king looked at Link and Zelda for a moment. The princess, fearing that her father would not approve of her union with Link, knelt at his feet and begged:

"Oh, Daddy, please! Link is the man I love! I could never love another man other than him! Please, father, he is everything to me, I know he will make me happy, he is a good man! Trust me!"

Link looked at the king with sincerity and spoke to try to convince him.

"I know I'm not a nobleman, but... I will do everything to make your daughter happy! I promise!"

After a few seconds of silence, the king looked at Link with a calm gaze and smiled.

"If my daughter loves you, so that means I can trust you. I see that you took good care of her when she was hidden in your village. Well, if that will bring happiness to Zelda's heart, so I allow you to marry her, my boy. And also because the kingdom needs a new queen now."

Link and Zelda were extremely overjoyed with the approval of the king. The two embraced and kissed passionately, and everyone who was in the hall applauded the couple with much excitement. Despite the sad news of Queen Midna's suicide, people now at least had a reason to celebrate, because the princess had reappeared and now she was getting married, becoming the new Queen of the people of Hyrule.
