Final Chapter - The wedding
-----------------------------------

The next day was Link and Zelda's wedding. Everyone in the kingdom was very happy with the return of the princess and the emergence of a new king. Link was a little nervous because now he would not be a simple boy from the forest anymore, or a simple young knight. He was becoming a king. He never imagined that someday he would be part of royalty, he only dreamed of being a knight to defend people, but now he would be much more than that. Now he would take care of a whole kingdom, and even though this was a huge responsibility, he was very happy since he was marrying the woman he loved. And he promised himself he would do anything to be a good king and husband to his wife.

The whole castle was decorated with flowers of all kinds, from roses, carnations, and chrysanthemums with varied colors. More than one hundred employees, dressed in elegant clothes, appropriate for the occasion, were in the main gate of the castle, ready to receive guests who were already beginning to enter the palace garden. It seemed that everyone in the kingdom was there to witness the marriage of the king's daughter with Link. The courtyard was crowded with royalty from neighboring kingdoms, all waiting for the wedding to begin.

Zelda was alone in her new royal chamber, looking at her beautiful reflection in the mirror, which looked back at her increasingly nervous. She was now becoming the new Queen to the people of Hyrule because her stepmother was dead. She should be happy because now she would marry the man she loved with all her heart, but she was still a little sad about her stepmother's suicide. She was gaining a husband but had lost another mother.

"I think everything has its price." She muttered to herself. "We can't have everything..."

Impa, the princess's faithful servant, cleared her throat to announce her presence and entered the royal chamber. Her eyes the color of rubies regarded the princess with tenderness. Zelda smiled weakly as Impa approached her.

"Impa, I'm glad you're here."

"Princess, what are you doing here? You should be preparing yourself for the wedding! Today is your big day!"

"I know... but..." She lowered her gaze. "... But I wished my stepmother were here to see me..."

Impa's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Midna?? If it were your mother, I would understand, but HER? After everything she did to you, you still wanted her here for your wedding?"

Zelda sighed a bit before speaking.

"I know, Impa, but still, she was a mother to me. She used to be good before. I don't know what made her change so suddenly, but I don't think it was her fault. I didn't want her to have had an end so sad like this... Despite everything she did to me all these years, I don't think she deserved to die. I even feel grateful for her, because if it were not for her I would never have fled to the Kokiri village. I would never have the chance to be with Link. Unintentionally or not, the poisoned apple that she gave me also brought Link back to me."

"I understand... I'm sorry, then..." Impa said, a little embarrassed.

"You do not have to apologize for it, Impa, it's alright..." Zelda said, hugging her.

After a brief moment of silence, Impa said:

"Now, you need to finish getting ready. The wedding will begin shortly."

"Yes, Impa. You're right."

Impa called the other maids to help Zelda prepare herself for the wedding. The servants helped the princess to put on the veil over her head and the crinoline that would help add volume to the dress, which was a fairly common practice for special occasions like this. Once completed the basic preparations, they brought the princess's wedding dress. The dress was made of the finest fabrics. It was embroidered with a lavish pattern of triforces and adorned with white crystals that sparkled in the light. The princess's heart leaped, then quickly sank. How wonderful it would have been to have her two mothers here with her today.

"You look beautiful, my daughter." She imagined the image of her first mother beside her, talking to her. The princess had met her biological mother only by paintings that decorated the palace, as she had died when Zelda was still very young. She had long brown hair like her and beautiful eyes the color of the sky.

"You really are stunning today, my little Snow White." She also imagined her stepmother by her side. She was with the same warm and sweet smile from the day when Zelda first met her, on the wedding day of her father.
Zelda smiled at the two imaginary mothers, for a moment believing they were real. But their images disappeared when a maid entered the room and announced:

"The wedding is about to begin. Everyone is waiting for the princess."

"Don't worry, we're going," Impa said calmly. Turning to Zelda, she said, "Are you ready, Princess?"

"I think so..." She said, a little anxious and nervous.

"So let's go." Impa took Zelda's hand and together they descended the stairs and went to the entrance of the main hall, where all the guests were waiting by the bride's entrance.

Her father, the king, entered hand in hand with her in the main hall. The hall of the castle was crowded with people from all parts of the kingdom who came to witness the union of the couple and also to honor the new king and new queen. Zelda saw that her Kokiri friends were also invited to attend the ceremony. They smiled and waved to the princess with great joy. The princess was filled with excitement with the presence of her Kokiri friends and she also smiled and waved at them.

But amidst the crowd, some people were not very excited about the union of the young couple of lovebirds, such as some members of the court who would not accept the marriage of the princess with a mere commoner and also two girls, one blond with short hair, called Ilia and a redhead with long hair named Malon. The two looked at the bride with a look of contempt and envy, as both were in love with Link, but were defeated by the princess.

Zelda's heart was pounding and she was very nervous and anxious, but happy because she was marrying a man she really loved. The only thing that saddened her was the fact of not having her two mothers to see her get married, but she knew deep down in her heart that they were watching the ceremony along with the Goddesses of Hyrule, wherever they were.

Suddenly, her heart leaped when she saw Link near the altar. He was wearing a lavish white tunic decorated with diamonds and pure gold. And he was also wearing a long red cape and a white cap similar to what he used to wear, with gold embroidery. Link was so handsome that it seemed he really was a prince.

Zelda's father was so happy he had tears in his eyes. Link took Zelda's hand and they stood together in front of the altar. He smiled tenderly at her.

"You are so beautiful, my princess." He whispered to her.

Zelda's cheeks flushed lightly with his praise.

"You too, my prince." She said shyly.

Then the priest began to speak:

"Ladies and gentleman. We are gathered here today to celebrate the marriage of Princess Zelda and Link. As you see, love is a powerful force, capable of uniting a princess with a simple young knight. And what makes this moment so special is that the love you two have for each other will affect everyone in this land. Through your happiness, we will become happy. Through your love for each other, we will love each other. Your love will be strong enough to govern a people who need joy in their lives.
Princess Zelda, do you swear, towards the Three Goddesses, that you will take Link to be your husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, in strength and in weakness, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, for better, for worse, every day of your life until death do you part?"

"I swear. While I live I will love him with the force of each beat of my heart."

"Link, do you swear, towards the Three Goddesses, that you will take Zelda to be your wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, in strength and in weakness, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, for better, for worse, every day of your life until death do you part?"

"I swear with all my heart, I will love her until the last days of my life."

"Then, by the power granted to me by the Three Goddesses of Hyrule, I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Link immediately took her in his arms and kissed her passionately. Zelda clung to him, kissing him back with all her heart.

Most people who were in the hall applauded the couple with happiness, including the king, who was very touched. After a few minutes, Link and Zelda parted their lips and smiled at each other. Then the king approached the couple and spoke aloud so everyone could hear:

"May the Goddesses in their goodness strengthen your consent and fill you both with their blessings! I wish with all my heart that you two can be very happy from that moment on. May you two rule over these lands with the same love and wisdom that I have ruled all these years. It is with great honor and joy that I crown Link as the new king of Hyrule."

The king pulled the crown off his head and placed it on Link's head. He bowed before the new king and all the people in the hall did the same. Link blushed when he saw people bowing to him. He never imagined that one day he would have so much power in his hands and he was feeling a bit awkward and embarrassed. And he blushed even more when he heard people speaking in chorus:

"May the Goddesses bless the new king and new queen! Long live Queen Zelda and King Link!

Zelda's father approached his son-in-law and hugged him tightly.

"I give you my blessing, my boy. Take good care of my daughter and my kingdom. Now it is your responsibility."

"Yes, your Majes... uh, I mean, sir!" Link spoke a little flustered.

Then the king turned to his daughter and said, "I am very proud of you. I'm very lucky to be your father. I hope you're happy, my daughter. I love you so much."

Tears began to flow from Zelda's eyes. Thrilled, she hugged her father tight. "I love you too, Dad! I am also lucky to have such a wonderful father!" She said, weeping with emotion.

He hugged her back and wept in joy. After a few seconds, he turned to people and said, "May the ball begin!"

And when Zelda's father said that, the musicians took their instruments and played a divinely beautiful waltz.

Link and Zelda started to dance amid the dancing hall. Link looked tenderly into his bride's eyes and kissed her tenderly once again, pulling her closer to him.

"I love you, Zelda." He whispered to her. "I promise I will do everything to make you happy from now on..."

Zelda kissed him again, pressing her lips against his in a gentle kiss.

"I love you too, Link.." She whispered.

They kissed again. Link wrapped her in his arms and kissed her passionately. The young couple remained throughout the dance exchanging loving glances as they danced in the middle of the great hall. Zelda imagined her mothers watching her, happy, smiling, and wishing that she could be happy from now on. Zelda held Link's hand, wondering what her new life would be like. With her stepmother gone, she was now Queen of her kingdom. And she thought she would rule as justly and passionately as her father had, and as her stepmother might have if things had been different.

She kissed Link again and closed her eyes, feeling a sense of love she'd never felt before. She was happy.

The only thing she longed for that day was her two mothers. She had lost both. No one understood why she still loved Midna. But, to Zelda, her stepmother had been a victim of a terrible thing that made her change so much so suddenly, but still, she had been a mother to her.

---

Some years had passed since the wedding ceremony. The kingdom of Hyrule was now in a time of great peace, tranquility, and harmony. King Link and queen Zelda ruled the kingdom with love and wisdom and were very loved by their people. The troubled times of war had faded from the memory of people and everyone was happy and living peacefully.

It was a common afternoon in the kingdom. The sun was hiding on the horizon slowly, giving rise to Twilight which announced the end of the day and the coming of the night.

In the Castle Graveyard, a woman was standing before a tomb. The breeze made her long brown hair slightly wavy and the dim light of the setting sun lit up her beautiful angelic face. It seemed so peaceful, but at the same time, a bit lonely.

"It's being a long time since you've gone, Sky Blue..." She spoke quietly, feeling the wind blow in her face. "A lot has happened in recent years... and... sometimes I wish you were here with me... I'm living moments of joy with my family, but I also miss you. You did terrible things to me, but I do not blame you for that. You were like a mother to me, though, so I forgive you, after all. I wish this hadn't ended so tragically, but I think that was the only way you found to escape from everything... And I do not believe that you have chosen death as a way to escape from my father's wrath. I believe there were other reasons you have decided to die. I kept this piece of mirror you stuck in your chest for a long time and whenever I look at it, I feel a very bad feeling about it. I have had many nightmares about it. I dream of a strange man dressed in a black cloak and a Cursed Mirror. I do not know what these dreams mean, but it seems they want to tell me something. Perhaps they may have something to do with your change from a good mother to a cruel stepmother and your suicide. I believe that deep in your heart you still loved me because if you didn't, you would have killed me when I was a helpless child. Well, I may never find out what really happened to you, but I feel in my heart you chose to die because you have repented of your errors and could not bear the weight of them and believed that death would be the best way to fix what you caused... And this is the greatest proof that you, deep down in your heart, did not want to hurt me. And I hope now you can find peace wherever you are..."

Zelda closed her eyes for a moment and a tear rolled down her cheeks. How she wished her stepmother were here now. How she wished she hadn't been destroyed by her vanity and grief. She was silent for a few minutes and did a little prayer to the Goddesses. But suddenly, something interrupted her.

"Mommy!" A little girl, about nine years old, with straight and brown hair, ran toward Zelda. The queen opened her arms to the child and when she approached, Zelda wrapped her in a tight embrace.

"Mom, Dad, and I searched for you everywhere! Why are you here?"

"Ah, it's nothing, my dear. I came here just to visit your grandma Midna."

"But you told me that Grandma Midna is now living with the Goddesses!"

"I know, I know..." Zelda said, smiling weakly. "But where is your father? Did you come here alone?"

"No, Daddy came with me, he is right there." The little girl said, pointing toward where her father was.

Zelda looked up and she saw Link standing a little apart, watching her from afar.

He walked slowly toward her. As he approached, Zelda got up and hugged him tightly.

"Why are you here, sweetheart?" Link asked, kissing her cheek gently. "Are you okay? I was starting to get worried..."

Zelda looked tenderly into her husband's eyes.

"You don't need to worry, my love. I'm fine... I just came to say farewell to my stepmother."

She kissed his lips lightly. Link wrapped her tightly in his arms, returning the kiss. And then a voice interrupted the moment.

"Eww!"

Link and Zelda looked at their daughter, who watched them with a disgusted look. The two smiled at the girl.

"Zelia, my daughter, your mother, and I, we need—"

Zelda put a finger on his lips, interrupting him.

"Leave it with me, love." Then she turned to her daughter and said "Hey, my little Snow White, why don't you go play in your room? It's getting cold, you can catch a cold. Do not worry about me and Dad, we need to talk a little."

"Okay, mom..." The girl muttered, walking back to the castle. Link and Zelda watched their daughter until she walked away.

"I don't understand why you call her Snow White... Is there any particular reason for that?" Link said, after a few seconds of silence.

Zelda sighed slightly and then spoke with a calm voice.

"It was like my stepmother used to call me in the good times we spent together."

Link stared at her, a little confused. Zelda sighed again and looked deeply into his eyes.

"Link, I know it sounds strange, but despite everything she did to me, she wasn't a bad person. She loved me. If she was really a bad person, she would have killed me when I was only an innocent child, but she didn't. Deep down in my heart, I knew there was something wrong going on with her, but I was not sure what it was. She acted on impulse, for fear of something or someone... Something made her change... But if it wasn't for her, I would never have fled to Kokiri Forest and would never have had the chance to live a great love with you. We always have to look at both sides of the coin. And that's why I don't feel hate for her, but pity. Because her pride and fear destroyed her, and I wish it hadn't been this way..."

Zelda looked down and felt a tear drip down her eyes. Link touched her chin and lifted her face so she would look into his eyes again. He smiled slightly, in a way to comfort her.

"You surprise me more and more, sweetie." He said softly as he stared deeply into her eyes. "Even after everything your stepmother did to you, you don't hate her for it. You really have a pure heart, without malice... I'm very lucky to have a wife as good and as wonderful as you..."

He kissed her lightly again, wrapping her lovingly in his arms. Zelda kissed him back, clinging to him. After a few minutes, Link pulled away a bit from her and began stroking her face.

They spent some time embraced, in silence. She put her hand on his chest and stared at him again.

"Well... I think you want to be alone now... " He whispered, gently stroking her face. "I'll let you say farewell to your stepmother. I'll be waiting for you in our room. Please don't take so long..."

He slightly kissed her forehead and then walked away, leaving her alone beside the grave of her stepmother.

The brunette looked sadly at the grave and said, "You know how much I love you, Sky Blue. You will always be in my heart."

A slight breeze stirred Zelda's hair, making her smile. As silly as it seemed, to Zelda, it had an extra special meaning. She imagined her stepmother before her, with a smile on her face, saying,

"I love you too, my beautiful Snow White. I always have and I always will."

The imaginary Queen blew a kiss to the young woman.

And Zelda smiled.

Hi!

Usually, the only things I read in English are Comics and visual novels because it's hard to focus on long text (I'm french). I was looking drawing of Zelda (where Zelda is in her glass coffin) when I've read an extract and it makes me curious. That's really a good storie, nice fairy tale adaptation.

I can't help it but I feel really sad for Midna. I've cryied at her dead, her story is so dramatic.
